Box Score WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Shaw University defeated Winston-Salem State University, 100-90 for their second straight Southern Division victory in C.E. Gaines Center on Wednesday night. The win improves Shaw to 11-14 overall and 8-5 in the CIAA, while WSSU falls to 11-13 overall and 5-8 in the league.
The Bears post a 4-3 mark in the division for second place, while WSSU falls to 4-3 in the standings for third.
David Madol led all players with 24 points and eight rebounds, while Jamar Cooper (Petersburg, VA) netted a season-high 21 points, and Akeem Echols (Baltimore, MD) charted a career-high 16 points. John Savoy (Temple Hills, MD) chipped in 15 points and Joell Hopkins, Jr. (Raleigh, NC) added 13 points and seven rebounds for the Bears.
Robert Story led the Rams with a career-high 22 points, while William Crandell added 17 points and T.J. Wilson with 13 points. Terrell Leach and C.J. Ford both contributed 10 points apiece in the loss.
The first half featured 13 lead changes and seven ties as both teams shot at least 40-percent from the floor. The Rams lit up the Gaines center from behind the arc, connecting 7-of-16 for 43-percent compared to the Bears 27-percent (3-11).
The Bears had an eight-point lead at the 16:31 mark before WSSU slowly took jabs at the lead and eventually own a one-point lead after a 3-pointer from Crandell.
Down the stretch, the first half became a wire-to-wire battle but Shaw stole the lead back with 20 seconds remaining when DeAaron Ward (Wilson, NC) got an offensive rebound to score a layup, giving Shaw the 45-44 advantage going into the locker room.
The Bears had outscored the Rams 12-3 in second chances but WSSU's bench posted a 32-11 skid over Shaw.
Shaw started the second half with two good free-throws from Savoy before WSSU scored a basket to give the Rams the slim 47-46 lead, following a 3-pointer by Wilson at the 19 minute mark; however, a 3-pointer by Madol gave Shaw the lead back for good.
The Bears maintained control for the remainder of the contest, including a 13-point lead midway through the game as Shaw never allowed the Rams to get any closer than four points to safely secure the win.
Shaw will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 13th when they play host to cross-town rival Saint Augustine's University for their annual Think Pink game in Spaulding Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m. and all fans are asked to wear pink in honor of Breast Cancer.
