Box Score RICHMOND, Va. – Senior John Savoy (Temple Hills, MD) scored a layup with .3 seconds left to secure a 58-56 victory over Virginia Union University Thursday night at Barco-Stevens Hall.
With no shot clock and the scored tied at 56, David Madol (Manchester, NH) missed a 3-pointer but Rob Moore, Jr. (Brooklyn, NY) got the offensive rebound but his attempt was no good as the ball landed in Savoy's hand for an contested layup for the game's winning basket. The victory improves the Bears to 5-10 overall and 2-1 in league action, while the Panthers fall to 6-8 overall and 0-3 in the CIAA.
Savoy led Shaw with a season-high 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Larry Richardson, II (Garner, NC) also had 16 points and five rebounds. Joell Hopkins, Jr. (Raleigh, NC) added 12 points and eight rebounds, while handing out five assists in the win.
A 3-pointer by Richardson, II put the Bears on the scoreboard first but the Panthers responded with a 3-pointer of their own from Kory Cooley to tie the game with 19:40 showing on the clock.
The two squads would exchange baskets over the next two minutes until the Bears established a seven point lead at the 10:40 mark after Jamar Cooper (Petersburg, VA) knocked down a deep 3-pointer. From there, SU would maintain the lead for the remainder of the half and would hold a 26-23 advantage at intermission.
The Panthers tied the game to start the second half with a 3-pointer from Cooley at the 19:31 mark but the Bears would take the lead back and hold on to it for about eight minutes until VUU fought back to tie the game twice, with the last time showing 26 seconds left in the game.
VUU had a chance to take the lead but the Panthers failed to capitalize on a three-point play in the final seconds as Savoy got the defensive rebound giving Shaw the last chance to win game.
Cooley finished with 18 points for Virginia Union.
Shaw will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 9th when they travel to Bowie State University. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m.
