BEARS FALL IN THE HANDS OF CHOWAN, 74-58 ON MONDAY

RALEIGH, N.C.  – The Shaw University men's basketball team suffered a 74-58 loss in the hands of the visiting Hawks of Chowan University on Monday night in Spaulding Gymnasium. The setback dropped the Bears to a 4-10 record overall and 1-1 mark in the CIAA, while the Hawks post a 9-3 overall record and 2-0 mark in the league.

 

Joell Hopkins, Jr. (Raleigh, NC) led the Bears in scoring with 15 points and seven rebounds. Rob Moore, Jr. (Brooklyn, NY) added nine points, while David Madol (Manchester, NH) contributed seven points and six rebounds.

 

Off to a good start, the Bears established a 4-0 run until the Hawks got on the board with a 3-pointer from Andrew Lopez (4-3). SU would build a 7-0 run at the 14:35 mark but the Hawks would not fold as they were able to tie the game 17 all before taking a one point lead off a 3-pointer from Marco Haskins with 8:24 left in the first half.

 

The Hawks was able to build a 7-0 run of their own to lead by as many as eight points - their largest lead of the half before taking a 35-32 lead at intermission.

 

CU shot 50 percent (5-of-10) from behind the arc and 46.7 percent (14-of-30) from the field, while the Bears connected 1-of-5 from the three for 20 percent and 13-of-32 for 40.6 percent in field goal range in the first half.

 

The Bears started off cold from the floor compared to the Hawks who picked up where they left off in the first half.

 

Shaw cut at the Hawks lead after two made free-throws from Jamar Cooper (Petersburg, VA) with the score 43-40 at the 15:53 mark in favor of Chowan but that would be the closest the Bears would get for the remainder of the half as the Hawks push the lead back up to double digits to cruise the victory.

 

For the contest, Chowan outscored the Bears 38-28 in the paint, 20-11 off of turnovers and 15-7 in fast break points.

 

Haskins finished with 16 points to lead the Hawks in scoring, while Kortez Smith had 14 points and five assists, Andrew Lopez finished with 13 points and Joe Goodwin added 12 points and 13 rebounds, respectively.

 

Shaw will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 7th when they travel to Richmond, Va., to face Virginia Union University. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
