Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. – Larry Richardson, II (Garner, NC) scored a game-high 21 points, while John Savoy (Temple Hills, MD) charted 13 points and six rebounds and Joell Hopkins, Jr. (Raleigh, NC) added 11 points and four rebounds as the Shaw University men's basketball team pulled away from Winston-Salem State University in the first half for a 87-70 CIAA Southern Division win.
Shaw improves to 8-11 overall, 5-2 in the league and 1-1 in the division after tonight's win, while the Rams fall to 7-11 overall, 1-6 in the standings and 1-1 in the division.
The Bears started the first half off with hot shooting and dominating the glass as Shaw groomed an 11-3 run at the 17:09 mark. A free-throw shot by DeAaron Ward (Wilson, NC) gave the Bears a 13-point lead before the Rams managed to cut the lead down to five points after a layup by Terrell Leach with 6:38 left before halftime.
Shaw fabricated a 12-2 run in the final two minutes of the half, giving the Bears their largest lead of the half at 16-points going into the locker room with a 44-28 lead.
The Rams staged their final run in with 7:50 left in the second half. WSSU eased within 16-points with a mini-run but the Rams would get no closer as Shaw went up by 27 points off a 12-6 run. WSSU shot 28 percent (19-67) in the second half.
For the contest, Shaw dominated in the paint 42-18 over WSSU. The Bears outscored the Rams 23-13 in second chance points and 35-25 in bench points, while erupting a 14-4 advantage in fast breaks.
The Bears outrebounded WSSU 61-34, while shooting 46.2 percent from the field.
Leach led the Rams in scoring with 15 points, while Rayvon Harris added 13 points and eight rebounds. William Crandel contributed 11 points in the loss.
Shaw will return to the hardwood on Saturday, January 23rd when they travel to cross-town rival Saint Augustine's for a tip-off scheduled for 4 p.m.
