BEARS SUFFER 79-67 SETBACK AT LIVINGSTONE

SALISBURY, N.C.  – The Shaw University men's basketball team's three-game win streak was snapped on Saturday afternoon as the Bears dropped a 79-67 decision to the defending CIAA Champions of Livingstone College inside New Trent Gymnasium.

 

The setback caused the Bears to drop to 7-11 overall, 4-2 in the CIAA and 0-1 in the Southern Division. As for the Blue Bears, they improve to 8-10 overall, 3-3 in the league and 1-0 in the division.

 

Larry Richardson, II (Garner, NC) led all scorers with 20 points, while John Savoy (Temple Hills, MD) and David Madol (Manchester, NH) both chipped in 10 points each for Shaw.

 

The Bears got outrebounded 39 to 35, including a 14-13 disadvantage in second chance points. The Blue Bears outscored Shaw 40-26 in the paint, while posting a 46-15 advantage from their bench and earned 19 points off of SU's 17 turnovers.

 

The first half featured 12 lead changes and seven ties with the last tie at 37-37 but a jumper from Ty Newman gave the Blue Bears the 39-37 lead going into the locker room at halftime.

 

Richardson, II opened up the second half with 3-pointer to give Shaw the lead (40-39) but LC took the lead back after two free-throws from Robert Flint. The Blue Bears would build a 5-2 run before the Bears cut the deficit to one-point after Richardson, II brought down the house with a slam dunk at the 15:43 mark.

 

The Bears took their last lead of the contest with 11:21 left and held on to the lead for over two minutes until Newman tied the game for the eleventh time (57-57) with a free-throw. His second free-throw gave the Blue Bears the lead for the remainder of the half as Shaw would not overcome the 11-point deficit later on in the game to suffer the loss.

 

Newman finished 19 points and 15 rebounds for Livingstone, while Daryl Trynham charted 14 points and four assists. Eric Dubose added 11 points off the bench for LC.

 
Shaw will return to Spaulding on Wednesday, Jan. 20th to host Winston-Salem State University with a tip scheduled for 8 p.m.
