Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. – Shaw University men's basketball (1-5) suffered a loss on the road this evening to Augusta University (2-1), 76-59 in a non-conference matchup.
Joell Hopkins, Jr. (Raleigh, NC) led the Bears with 17 points, while grabbing five rebounds. Larry Richardson, II (Garner, NC) finished with 10 points and Rob Moore (Brooklyn, NY) contributed nine points and five rebounds in the setback.
The Bears shot 42.6 percent from the field, while the Jaguars shot 44.4 percent.
Hopkins, Jr. got the Bears on the board first with a good jumper that would ignite a 7-2 lead at the 17:47 mark. Shaw would control the game most of the first half until the Jaguars tied the game at 21 even after a made free throw with 3:41 showing on the clock. After two good free throws for AU, the Jaguars would take the lead and go into intermission with 32-24 lead.
Augusta shot well in the second half while working with a lead, connecting on 24 of its tries. The Jaguars also converted on 23-of-29 attempts from the foul line, while Shaw went to the line 8-of-11 times.
Despite being tied 14 apiece in the turnover column, the Bears were out beaten in rebounds with a 38-27 disadvantage.
Shaw got back within seven on a Richardson, II dunk with 3:42 left but could not pull any closer.
The Bears will look to recover when they return to action on Monday, Nov. 28th when they host Barry University for a non-conference matchup. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
