Shaw Closes Softball Season With Doubleheader Split at Virginia Union

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

RICHMOND, VA. - The Shaw softball team closed out their season with a doubleheader split against Virginia Union Monday afternoon.  The Lady Bears captured the first game 10-8, then dropped their season closer 15-14.

In the first game, Shaw took advantage of five Lady Panther errors to claim ten unearned runs on their way to the win.  After breaking on top in the second inning with two run, the Lady Bears broke the game open with a seven-run third inning.

With two out in the third, the Lady Bears started their offensive outburst with a bases loaded walk to Chelsea Holliday, then a triple to Briana Bease which cleared the bases, giving Shaw a 6-0 lead.  Bease would then steal home for Shaw's seventh run.  The Lady Bears would score two more in the inning to earn a 9-0 lead.

Virginia Union fought their way back into the game, with a single run in the fourth, four in the fifth and three in the seventh, but it wasn't enough.

Renee Holdmes was the only Lady Bear with multiple hits in the first game, with two.  Bease's three RBI led the team, while Holmes, Shanice Anderson, and Holliday scored two runs apiece.

Daniela Archibold was the winning pitcher with only six hits allowed.  She gave up eight runs, but only three were earned.  She walked four and struck out one.

In the second game, both teams exploded for double-digit runs from the start and while Shaw took the early lead, Virginia Union broke a tie in the bottom of the seventh with a walk-off single.

Shaw jumped on top early, scoring four in the first and six in the second to earn a 10-1 lead.  The Lady Panthers responded with eight runs in the bottom of the second to trim the Shaw lead to only one.  The two teams battled evenly the rest of the contest, until Union broke the tie with final run in the seventh.

Anderson had three hits for the Lady Bears and Jolene Arroyo and Archibold had two hits apiece.  Anderson drove home three runs in the contest and Archibold two.

The Lady Bears finish their season at 7-25 on the season, 4-12 in the CIAA.
