RALEIGH, N.C. -  The Shaw University men's basketball team outshot visiting Livingstone, but turnovers led to a loss as the Bears fell 83-76 to the Blue Bears Saturday afternoon at C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.

The loss drops Shaw to 7-15 overall, 5-7 in the conference and 1-5 in the CIAA's Southern Division.  Livingstone improves to 15-6 overall, 8-4 in the CIAA and 5-1 in the division.

Shaw committed 20 turnovers, leading to 27 Livingstone points.  The Blue Bears, in comparison, had only 12 miscues that led to 17 Shaw points.

The Bears stayed in the game with a hot shooting hand, hitting 49.1 percent from the floor, compared to only 42.9 percent from Livingstone.  Shaw also outrebounded the visitors 35-31.

In addition to turnovers, Shaw was also hurt by long distance shots from Livingstone.  The Blue Bears drained eight threes, compared to only two for the Bears.

In the first half, Shaw battled back from a seven-point deficit.  With 5:58 left in the first, Livingstone's Mark Thomas hit a layup, was fouled, and converted the three-point play to give Livingstone a 27-20 lead.

Larry Richardson hit a jumper to start and eight-point run for the Bears.  With 3:29 left in the first, Joe Reid drained a pair of free throws to give Shaw a 28-27 lead.

Livingstone built a two-point lead, but Aquil Younger hit a jumper in the lane with two seconds left in the half to send the teams to their locker rooms in a 33-all tie.

The opening minutes of the second half belonged to Livingstone.  After Derrick Hunter hit a single free throw for the Bears, the Blue Bears scored eight straight, taking a 42-34 lead with 17:08 left in the game.

It took Shaw over four minutes to score their next point, finally getting on the scoreboard at the 15:44 mark with another free throw -- this one from Koron Reed.  This proved to be the start of a five-point run that culminated in a layup on the fast break from Albert Smith that cut the Livingstone lead to 42-39.

With 11:19 left, the Bears would actually take the lead on a layup from Younger that gave them a 49-48 advantage.

Livingstone answered with a 14-2 run that flipped the advantage and built it to 11 points on a fastbreak layup from Eric Dubose.

With 7:04 left, Livingstone reclaimed an 11-point cushion, but Shaw scored seven straight, including an old-fashioned three-point play from Richardson that cut the Blue Bear lead to 64-60.

Livingstone again went on a scoring run, this one 7-2, to stretch their lead to nine at 71-62 with 4:33 left.

Shaw would trim the lead to as little as four, but could not get closer as the Blue Bears finished with the 83-76 win.

Richardson finished with 25 points for the Bears, while Younger added 13 and Hunter and Andre Paulk had ten each.  Reed had nine rebounds and Younger five assists to lead the Bears.

Thomas hit five shots from beyond the arc and cruised to 36 points.  Jody Hill had 13 and Dubose had 12 for the Blue Bears.  Eric Mayo's six rebounds led Livingstone.

The Bears return to action Wednesday when they travel to Winston-Salem State for a 7:30 p.m. tip.  Saturday, they host cross-town rival Saint Augustine's at 4:00 p.m.
