Bears Break Five-Game Losing Streak With 81-67 Win Over Johnson C. Smith

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. -  The Shaw University men's basketball team used a 14-2 run late in the second half to power their way past Johnson C. Smith 81-67 in a game played Saturday afternoon at Shaw's C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.  The win breaks a five-game losing streak.

The win is the Bears' first in four divisional games.  Overall, Shaw now stands at 7-13, 5-5 in the CIAA and 1-3 in the Southern Division.  JCSU falls to 13-8, 5-6 in conference and 2-3 in the division.

Shaw held a slim 56-54 lead with 7:49 left in the game, but went on a 14-2 run that broke open the contest and gave them a 70-56 lead with 2:55 left in the game.

The Bears had a definite shooting advantage from the floor, hitting 50.8 percent versus 38.5 percent for JCSU.  Johnson C. Smith did shoot better from the line, hitting 80 percent of their 15 shots.  The Bears took more shots (23), but hit only 60.9 percent.

Shaw held a 10-rebound advantage, 44-34, and scored eight points more in the paint.

Johnson C. Smith held the lead throughout much of the first half, but could not shake free of the tenacious Bears.  With 7:39 left in the first, JCSU's Patrell Rogers hit a layup, was fouled and converted the three-point play to give the Golden Bulls a 24-19 lead.

Larry Richardson responded with a three, and in another minute, Shaw had again tied the score, this time at 26 -- the sixth tie to that point in the half.

Karon Reed gave the Bears their first lead with a dunk with 3:07 left in the half, then DaAaron Ward added a tip in to give Shaw their largest lead of the half at four.

The Golden Bulls reeled off four straight to tie the contest again, and the two teams exchanged buckets the rest of the way.  At the buzzer, Aquil Younger found Reed under the bucket for a thundering slam dunk that tied the contest for the ninth time at 34-all.

The second half began much as the first had ended, with neither team able to build more than a four-point lead.

After JCSU's Joshua Linson hit a three that tied the contest at 47 -- the 11th tie of the contest -- Shaw began to take control.  Younger hit a jumper to give Shaw the lead -- a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way.

Linson hit another three to take a five-point Shaw lead to two, 56-54, with 7:49 left.  Shaw went on their 14-2 run, getting eight points from Derrick Hunter during that time.  With 2:55 left, Reed slammed home a dunk that brought the capacity crowd to their feet and gave Shaw a 70-56 lead.

The teams finished the game 11-11, giving Shaw the 81-67 win.

Hunter finished the contest with 21 points, while Richardson had 20, Andre Paulk had 12 and Reed had ten.  Reed's nine rebounds and Younger's 12 assists led the Bears.

Linson led the Golden Bulls with 11 points, while Emilio Parks had ten.  A total of 12 players scored for Johnson C. Smith.  Antwan Wilkerson had nine rebounds to lead JCSU.

The Bears take to the road Wednesday when they visit Fayetteville State in a game that was rescheduled after the bad weather last week.  Tipoff is 7:30 p.m.  Shaw returns home on February 8 when they host Livingstone at 4:00 p.m. at C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
