Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. -  The Shaw University men's basketball team didn't trail for 39 minutes and 53 seconds of their game Saturday afternoon at SAU's Emery Gymnasium, but with seven seconds left, Tashaun Stockdale hit a layup for the Falcons to give them a 51-49 lead.  Shaw's final shot missed the mark.

With the loss -- their fifth straight -- Shaw falls to 6-13 overall, 4-5 in CIAA action and 0-3 in the division.  Saint Augustine's  improves to 11-7 on the season, 4-4 in conference and 1-2 in the division.

Neither team shot well, with Shaw hitting 32.1 percent versus 25.5 percent for Saint Aug.  The difference came at the foul line, where the Falcons hit 27 of 37.  Shaw shot only 19 free throws, making 12.

It was a game neither team seemed to want to win -- or even score in.  The teams combined for only 47 points in the first half, and it took more than ten minutes for Saint Augustine's to score a field goal.

In all, Saint Augustine's scored only five field goals in the first, but hit 12 of 18 from the free throw line to keep them in the contest.

At the under-15 media timeout, five fouls had been committed and two points scored -- all by Shaw -- giving the Bears a 2-0 lead with more than five minutes gone.

With 9:16 left in the first, Saint Augustine's finally hit from the field, but Shaw had only managed 12 points.  Combined with the four free throws they had already scored, Saint Aug now trailed 12-6.

Derrick Hunter brought the Shaw fans to their feet with a dunk at the 6:23 mark to give Shaw a 20-10 lead.

Four minutes later, Shaw led by nine, but the Falcons closed out the half on a six-point run, trimming the Shaw lead to three at the half.

It took nearly three full minutes for either team to move the scoreboard in the second.  With 17:14 remaining, Keith Crawford hit two free throws to trim Shaw's lead to one.  It would take four more minutes for Saint Augustine's to score again.

In those four minutes, Shaw managed only six points, including four from Hunter, to give the Bears a 31-24 win.

The Bears would build the lead to nine, 35-26, at the 12-minute mark on a pair of free throws from Larry Richardson.

With 10:44 left, Koron Reed slammed home a dunk to give Shaw a 38-30 lead, but Saint Augustine's finally found some offensive rhythm, scoring the next seven points, cutting the lead to 38-37 on a pair of free throws from Raheem Joliffe.

With 2:51 left, Aquil Younger hit a layup on the fastbreak to give Shaw a 49-45 lead, but those would be the last points for the Bears.

With 1:34 left, Jonathan Crawley hit a pair of free throws to tie the contest, then Stockdale hit his layup to close out the scoring and give Saint Augustine's their only lead of the game, 51-49.

Hunter led the Bears with 16 points, while Joe Reid had ten.  Richardson's eight rebounds and Jeffery LeGree's two assists led the Bears.

Joel Kindred had 13 points -- 11 from the free throw line -- to lead Saint Augustine's.  Stockdale added 12.  Crawley's nine rebounds and Amere May's four assists led the Falcons.

The Bears take to the road Wednesday when they visit Fayetteville State.  Tipoff is 7:30 p.m.  Shaw returns home on February 1 when they host Johnson C. Smith at 4:00 p.m. at C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
