FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Taylor Moore and Keyunna White combined for a two-hit pitching effort as the Shaw claimed a 2-0 victory against Fayetteville State in the first game of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader. The Lady Broncos responded with a 7-2 win in the second game.
The Lady Bears scored both their runs in the top of the third. With one out, two Lady Bears collected walks and Sheniqua Fahie loaded the bases with a single to right field. Gina Yozzo then walked, forcing Shanice Anderson home. After the second out was recorded, Kemesha Braithewaite walked, driving in another run as Cortnee Kelly crossed the plate.
After White loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the third, Moore came in in relief and got two quick outs to keep the Lady Broncos off the scoreboard. She would give up only one hit the rest of the way, giving the Lady Bears the win.
In the second game, the Lady Broncos broke on top with two runs in the bottom of the first, then added a single run in both the second and third innings before Shaw got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth.
With one out, Fahie tripled to right field, then scored on Yozzo's double to left center. Renee Holmes' sacrifice moved Yozzo to third, and she scored when Braithewaite singled through the left side of the infield.
The Lady Broncos answered with another two in the bottom of the fourth, stretching the lead back to four runs at 6-2. They would add another run in the bottom of the sixth for the 7-2 final.
Shaw returns to action tomorrow when they host division rival Winston-Salem State in a doubleheader. First pitch is at 1:00 p.m. at Walnut Creek Softball Complex.
