Box Score MURFREESBORO, NC - Shaw struggled at the plate but battled hard falling to Chowan 8-7in extra innings in the second day of the CIAA roundups cluster 2 played on the Hawks Field at Chowan University in Murfreesboro, NC Sunday morning.
The Lady Bears found it difficult to get any hits in five innings of the eight-inning game, but still managed to keep it a close game against the Hawks.
The Lady Bears played solid defense, but they were not able to do the same on offense. They collected 11 hits, but were only able to score seven runs.
Shanice Anderson had the first hit of the game in a single to left center field, but was only able to make it as far as first base. The Hawks were able to start off strong in the bottom of the first inning with three runs off of two hits and a Shaw error.
The Lady Bears finally plated two runs in the top of the third. Kemesha Braithewaite walked to first and was able to advance to second when Shanice Anderson singled up the middle. Both runners were able to advance a base when Courtnee Kelly grounded to second.
A two RBI double to left center by Sheniqua Fahie scored both Anderson and Braithewaite.
In the fourth inning the Lady Bears and Hawks were able to score four runs each. Shaw was able to score their four runs off of four hits and an error, while the Hawks scored four runs off eight hits.
On an error by the shortstop, Daniella Archibold was able to reach first, then stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball.
For one RBI Erica Lafrades flied out to center field scoring Archibold an unearned run.
A two-RBI homer by Kelly down the right field line scored Anderson as well.
With the score knotted at seven, the two teams went into an extra inning. Shaw's Archibold made it to third with one out, but the Lady Bears could not plate her to take the advantage.
Chowan got the win on a walk-off single by Liz Hipple, who drove in Hannah Joyce to claim the win.
Anderson led the Lady Bears with three hits on four at bats, scoring three runs and driving in another. Kelly, Fahie and Yozzo collected two hits apiece. Kelly drove in three runs.
The Lady Bears will be back in action in a doubleheader Tuesday at 1:00 p.m., hosting Fairmount State. All Shaw home games are held at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex.
