Curtis Hines Shoots Shaw Past Virginia Union 92-62

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. — Curtis Hines sank eight shots from beyond the three-point line to power Shaw University past visiting Virginia Union Thursday night at C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.

Hines seemed to be shooting from somewhere just east of Durham as he camped in the corner and drained threes on both ends of the court.  He missed only two of the ten long-distance shots he put up.  He was 10 for 12 overall, finishing with 28 points to lead all scorers.

"He's going to have games like that.  He shoots the ball very well," said Shaw head coach Cleo Hill, Jr.  "He's actually the only player on the team that has ever beaten me at shooting.  I am assuming this won't be the last time he shoots like this."

"I just try to fill my role on this team.  I practice hard and hopefully it carries over to the game.  Tonight it did," said Hines.  "My teammates found me open in all the right spots.  It was one of those nights.  I had confidence that every ball was going in.  My teammates have confidence in me, too."

Hines was just one of four Bears who scored in double digits.  In all, ten of the 11 players who saw action in the game scored.  The Bears were 13 of 19 from beyond the arc (68.4 percent), and hit 53.8 percent of their field goals (28 for 52).

"We can score the basketball," said Hill.  "The challenges come with us on the defensive and rebounding end.  When we play defense and rebound, we will have more games like this."

The win improves Shaw's record to 10-4, and the Bears remain undefeated in the CIAA with a 4-0 mark.

"I think the guys do work hard," said Hill of the CIAA unbeaten streak.  "I think we've been lucky and avoided injuries.  If we work hard, we can keep this going."

Virginia Union falls to 2-9 on the season, 0-4 in the conference.  The Panthers hit only 37.5 percent of their shots from the field, and only 41.2 percent (seven of 17) from the free throw line.

The Panthers took the early lead in the game, building a 7-4 lead with nearly four minutes gone in the period.  Hines answered with a three to tie the game, sparking a 15-1 run that powered the Bears into a double-digit lead.  Hines hit another of his threes from the left corner to give Shaw a 19-8 lead with 11:40 remaining.

The two teams battled evenly, with Shaw holding onto a ten-point lead at 27-17 with seven minutes left in the half.  The Panthers reeled off five straight to cut the Shaw lead to only five,27-22, when Calvin Brown hit a layup.

Shaw closed out the half on a 14-4 run, capped by yet another Hines trey with four ticks left on the clock to give Shaw a 41-26 lead going into the half.

Virginia Union opened the second half with a scoring run of their own, outscoring the Bears 7-1 and trimming the Shaw lead into single digits at 42-33.

Taurus Dortch sank a three of his own to start a 16-2 Shaw run that featured threes from Dortch and Andre Paulk

Omar Briggs finally sank a layup for the Panthers to stop the Shaw run, and Kevin Pankey sank a three for VUU to cut the Shaw lead to under 20 at 60-41.  Paulk answered with another three to push the lead past 20.  His trey made the score 56-35 with 15:05 left on the clock. The Panthers were never able to get below a 20-point deficit after that point.

Three minutes later, Pankey sank a three to trim the deficit to 20, but John Savoy and Paulk had back-to-back dunks to boost the Shaw lead back to 24 with 11:09 remaining.

With 1:52 left in the game, Derrick Hunter tipped in a missed shot to give Shaw a 90-60 lead.  Omar Briggs had a dunk for the Panthers, then the Bears closed out the scoring with a pair of free throws, setting the final 92-62 tally.

Karron Johnson had a double-double for the Bears with 14 points and 11 rebounds.  Derrick Hunter added 11 free throws to his single bucket for 13 points.  He also pulled in eight rebounds and had a game-high six assists.  Paulk finished with 13 points, hitting all three of his shots from the field - two from beyond the arc - and adding five of six from the free throw line.

Pankey was the only Panther in double digits, scoring 11 points on four-of-nine shooting.  Te'Quan Alers had six rebounds to lead VUU while Brown had three assists to pace  his team.

After over a month on the road, the Bears have now begun what will become a four-game home stand.  Next up for the Bears is Bowie State.  "They match up pretty well with us.  They're a pretty decent team," said Hill of the Bulldogs.

The Bears tip against Bowie State Saturday afternoon in a 4:00 p.m. tip at Shaw's C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
