RALEIGH, N.C. - The Shaw softball team split a doubleheader with Saint Augustine's Saturday afternoon at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex.  They won the first 9-7, but lost the second 10-9.

The Lady Bears broke on top in the first inning of the first game, turning two walks a hit batter and a single into three runs.

With the Score 4-2 at the top of the fourth, Keshma James led off with a home run.  Later in the inning, Morgan James drove in two with her single to give the Lady Bears a 7-2 lead.

The Lady Falcons answered with three in the bottom of the fifth, but after a scoreless sixth inning, Shaw added a pair of unearned runs in the seventh.  Saint Augustine's picked up two more in the bottom of the seventh, to make the final 9-7.

Kashia Hemphill, who came into the game in the second inning, pitched six innings in relief, getting the win.  She gave up six earned runs, walking no one and striking out six.

Briathewaite was the only Lady Bear to collect more than one hit.  All nine Shaw runs came in on seven hights, but the Lady Bears took advantage of five Saint Aug errors for the tally.

Saint Augustine's got timely hitting in the second, scoring ten runs, eight of them earned on 12 hits and three Shaw miscues.   The Lady Bears had a last-inning rally, but it came up a run short as they fell 10-9.

Braithewaite keyed an offensive outburst for Shaw in the first inning of the nightcap, double down the left field line to drive in a run and put herself in position to score on Shai Bease's single.  In all, Shaw scored four in the first. 

Saint Augustine's answered with two in the bottom of the second and another three in the bottom of the third to take the 5-4 lead.  They increaseed the lead to 6-4 in the bottom of the fourth.

Shaw tied it in the top of the fifth when two unearned runs plated.  But the Lady Falcons reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth and extended it to 10-6 in the bottom of the sixth.

In the seventh and final inning, Courtnee Kelly led off with a walk, advanced to third on a double from Morgan Jones and she and Jones both scored off a passed ball.  Chelsea Holliday kept the rally alive by being hit by a pitch, then scoring on another Braithewaite double.

With no outs, Braithewaite - the tying run - advanced to third on a wild pitch, but the next three batters could not get the ball out of the infield and the Lady Bears fell a run short, falling 10-9.

Kelly, Holliday and Braithewaite each had two hits in the second game.  Braithewaite drove in two runs as well.  Kelly scored three times while Holliday scored twice.

The Lady Bears return to action on Thursday when they travel to Winston-Salem to take on the Lady Rams.  First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
