OXFORD, Pa. - The Shaw softball team got solid pitching performances and steady offense on their way to a doubleheader sweep over Lincoln (PA). The Lady Bears took the first game 7-3 and claimed the second 9-3.
With the wins, Shaw improves to 7-26 overall and 4-6 in the CIAA. Today's games did not count as conference matches. Lincoln falls to 0-18 overall and 0-12 in the conference.
In the first game, Shaw gave up two runs in the bottom of the first - after scoring three in the top of the inning - and never trailed on their way to the 7-3 win.
Daniela Archibold started the game, and went two innings before being relieved by Keyunna White. Together the two pitchers scattered six hits, giving up an additional run in the sixth as the only scoring.
The Lady Bears took control of the game in the opening frame on a triple from Courtnee Kelly and back-to-back singles from Jolene Arroyo and Shai Bease that plated three runs.
In the third, Shaw added another run when Arroyo slapped a single to center field, which scored Kelly. Kelly was also the offensive sparkplug in the sixth, doubling to knock in two runs and eventually scoring on an error to close out the scoring.
In all, Kelly was three for four in the first game, driving in three and scoring twice. Arroyo was two for four, driving in two and scoring another herself.
In the second game, Shaw rode a six-run offensive explosion in the second inning to a 9-3 win over the Lady Lions. The Lady Bears took advantage of nine walks on the game, collecting six hits for the nine-run offensive output.
In the top of the second, the Lady Bears took advantage of three walks, a hit batter, a wild pitch and only two Shaw hits to score six runs. Kelly and Arroyo collected the two singles, each driving in two runs on their hits.
Kashia Hemphill pitched six innings, giving up all three earned runs on a total of eight hits and two walks. Sheniqua Fahie came in for a single inning of relief, walking one and striking out one.
Kelly, Arroyo and Morgan Jones drove in two runs apiece to lead the Lady Bears. Six different Lady Bears got one hit apiece.
Shaw returns to the field Monday afternoon when they travel to Washington Adventist for a doubleheader. Game time is 1:00 p.m. with the second game to follow. They return to Raleigh Saturday, April 7 when they face Saint Augustine's at the Walnut Creek softball complex. Game times are 2:00 and 4:00 p.m.
