[Raleigh, NC] - Five Bears - including all three seniors honored before the game - scored in double digits as Shaw easily handled Winston-Salem State 80-59 in a game played at C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium Monday night.
The win is Shaw's 19th straight and boosts their record to 23-2 on the season, 15-0 in the CIAA and 9-0 in the CIAA's Southern Division. The Bears have already locked up the top spot in the division. The Rams fall to 18-7 overall, 10-5 in the CIAA and 4-5 in the division.
The Bears shot 45 percent in the game, while holding WSSU to only 33.3 percent. Shaw outrebounded the Rams 51-30, and distributed the ball well, getting 16 assists in the game. In contrast, the Rams had only nine.
Shaw fell behind early, allowing the Rams to build a 10-4 lead in the opening three and a half minutes of the contest. With 16:36 left in the first, Justin Glover hit a pair of free throws to give WSSU a 10-4 lead.
With 15:55 showing on the clock, Malik Alvin - one of the three seniors honored on Senior Night - hit a three that triggered a 22-point run. With 8:53 left in the half, Alvin hit a pair of free throws to give Shaw a 26-10 lead. WSSU would never cut their deficit to under ten.
The Rams did close the deficit to 14 with six minutes left, but the Bears scored the next eight points, upping their lead to 22.
With two seconds left on the clock, Tony Smith - another of the three seniors - got a steal and drove the lane, dunking as the clock expired to give the Bears a 43-19 lead.
The Bears opened the second half by extending their lead in the early going. With 16:22 left, the third senior honored - Devon Mclendon - hit a pair of free throws to give the Bears a 51-24 lead.
The Rams would respond with a 15-4 run that trimmed the Shaw lead to 16 on Wakefield Ellison's three with 11:24 left. They could get it no closer, though, and the Bears eventually stretched their lead back above 20.
Alvin finished the game - and his Shaw home career - with 20 points to lead all scorers. Smith had 14, Junius Chaney had 13, Derrick Hunter 12 and Mclendon 10. Chaney added 17 rebounds for the double-double. Alvin led the Bears with five assists and Smith had four.
Glover led the Rams with 15 points while WyKevin Bazemore added 12. Bazemore paced the squad with nine rebounds and Glove had six assists.
The Bears close out their season Thursday evening when they travel across town to take on Saint Augustine's in a 7:30 p.m. tip.
