Chaney's 26 Leads #9 Shaw Past Fayetteville State

Box Score

[Fayetteville, NC] -  Junius Chaney had a season-high 26 points and also pulled in 12 rebounds for the double-double to help #9 Shaw power past Fayetteville State 86-74 in a game played at F.J. Capel Arena Saturday night.

The win is the Bears' 18th straight and improves their record to 22-2 on the season, 14-0 in the CIAA and 8-0 in the Southern Division.  Shaw has already clinched the top spot in the division.  Fayetteville State falls to 8-15, 5-9 in the conference and 3-5 in the division.

Shaw held its strongest advantage in shooting, hitting 49 percent of its shots from the field (25 for 51) compared to FSU's 37.3 percent shooting (28 for 75).  The Bears also went to the free throw line 25 more times than the Broncos, including 16 in the last five minutes of the game - of which the Bears hit 13.

Fayetteville State took more shots, pulled in more rebounds, and shot better from the free throw line.  They also had more points off the bench (45-25) and second-chance points (21-16), but could not overcome the good shooting or inside presence that Shaw brought to the game.

The Bears looked every bit like one of the top teams in the nation, opening the game on an 11-2 run barely three minutes into the game.   With 14:19 left in the first, Tony Smith hit a three pointer to give the Bears their first double-digit lead at 16-6.  The Broncos responded with four straight, but Malik Alvin hit a three of his own to stretch the Shaw lead back to nine.

With 9:00 left in the half, Smith hit another three, giving the Bears a 31-17 lead.    Four minutes later, though, Tyrrel Tate hit a layup off the fastbreak for FSU to trim the Shaw lead to eight.  The Bears closed the half scoring five straight to take a 44-31 lead into the locker room.

Shaw built a 20-point lead midway through the second half before the Broncos answered with an 8-0 run.   Chaney had a dunk to stem the tide and give the Bears back a 14-point lead, 64-50.

With 4:58 left in the game, Smith had a dunk to make the score 73-60.  It would be the last field goal the Bears would hit.  For the rest of the game, the Bears would go to the free throw line on all but one possession, hitting 13 of the 16 attempts and closing the game with an 86-74 win.

Chaney's 26 points and 12 rebounds led both squads.  Smith - who had a triple-double in Monday's win over Johnson C. Smith - had another all-around strong performance with 19 points, nine rebounds and six assists.  Malik Alvin added another 16 points.

Lenton Donnell led the Broncos with 16 points and Tate added another 15.  Tate also led the Broncos with eight rebounds.

The Bears return to action Monday, February 20 when they host Winston-Salem State in the annual Senior Night game in an 8:00 p.m. tip.  All Shaw home games are played at C. C. Spaulding Gymnasium on the Shaw campus.
