(Raleigh, NC) – Monica Grimmage knew how to take the spotlight on her Senior Day at Shaw University. Over a softball doubleheader sweep over Livingstone, she had six hits, including two home runs, to lead the Lady Bears over the Lady Blue Bears 13-7 and 14-7.
Other than Grimmage's performances, the two games shared little in common. In the first, Livingstone scored three quick runs in the first, only to be tied by Shaw in the bottom of the first. Eventually, Livingstone built a 7-4 lead, but in the bottom of the fifth, in an offensive outburst anchored by Grimmage's RBI triple, the Lady Bears scored six runs.
Grimmage collected another RBI and scored another run in Shaw's three-run sixth inning which brought the final score to 13-7.
Shaw hitters gathered 19 hits in the first game, including three-hit performances from Erica Lafrades, Emily Montgomery, Kashia Hemphill and Grimmage – who fell a single shy of hitting for the cycle. Grimmage drove in four runs.
In her first at bat in the second game, Grimmage got that single, driving in Shaw's third run in the first. They added another five in the second, then struggled for two innings. The Lady Blue Bears scored two in the third and another five in the fifth to put the score at 11-7.
The Lady Bears scored a single run in the fifth, then in the sixth, Grimmage hit another home run – this one a walkoff as Shaw won 14-7 on the mercy rule.
Lafrades collected four hits and scored four runs in the second game, while driving in three runs. Grimmage had another three-hit performance, driving in four runs and scoring the game ender.
The two wins improve Shaw's record to 11-36 on the year, 8-5 in the CIAA. The game concludes Shaw's home schedule. The Lady Bears take to the road this weekend for a trip into Georgia where they will play Pfeiffer and Savannah State. They return to Raleigh on Thursday, April 12, when they take on Saint Augustine's at 1:00 at Walnut Creek Softball Complex.
