(Anderson, SC) - The Shaw softball team began their three-day swing through South Carolina by dropping a pair of games to Anderson with identical 10-1 scores. Both games were called after five-innings on the eight-run rule.
Shaw (1-5) managed only one hit in the first game, and two in the second in the losses.
In the first, Jeneva Carner made her first pitching start, getting tagged for ten runs, nine of them earned. She gave up four in the first, but then settled down for two innings, before giving up three each in the fourth and fifth.
Carner manufactured the only run for the Lady Bears in the third inning, getting on base with a single to the right side of the infield – the only hit in the game. She then stole second, stole third, and came home when the throw to third went wide.
In the second game, two errors in the third allowed four Anderson unearned runs to score. Anderson added another six runs in fourth – five earned – to take the 10-1 lead and end the game after four and a half innings. Shakia Pledger (1-2) was the losing pitcher for Shaw.
The Bears scored their only run in the fourth, when Emily Montgomery walked and stole second. She scored an unearned run on an error from the catcher that allowed her home. Erica Lafrades and Monica Grimmage got the only hits for Shaw in the second game of the doubleheader.
