(Raleigh, NC) – Shaw pitcher Cinnamon Morrow (left) and Fayetteville State pitcher Misty Huber had a lot in common Thursday afternoon. Each pitched both games of the doubleheader; each went 1-1; each of their wins was marked by a second inning offensive outburst and a stellar pitching performance until the late innings.
In the first, Huber benefitted from a six-run second inning, and pitched a one hitter through six innings.
Leading 8-1 going into the last half of the seventh, Huber gave up three runs, one unearned, but shut the door before the Lady Bears could do additional damage and held on for the 8-4 FSU victory.
On the game, Huber allowed only five hits, gave up three earned runs, and struck out eight.
In the second game, Morrow's teammates gave her a five-run second inning and built it to a seven-run lead by the end of the fifth.
Morrow, who had allowed only three hits in the first five innings, gave up two in the sixth and combined with one error, allowed three Lady Broncos to cross the plate. Only one of the runs was earned.
She gave up one more hit and one more run in the seventh, but Huber's fly out to centerfield ended the game with Shaw on top 7-4.
On the game, Morrow allowed six hits, four runs, two earned runs, and struck out three.
Offensively, the star of the afternoon was Fayetteville State's LaTonia Gatling, who had five hits in eight at bats and scored twice. April Branch drove in four runs over the two games for the Lady Broncos.
Erica Lafrades was the Shaw offensive star with three hits and two RBI on the afternoon.
The split brings the Lady Bears to 10-20 on the season, and 8-6 in the CIAA. FSU is 15-19 onthe year, and 8-7 in the CIAA.
The Lady Bears face Saint Paul's tomorrow in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. This doubleheader will be played at Worthdale Park off of Sunnybrook Road. (NOTE: This is a change in location.)
