(Raleigh, NC) – The Shaw softball team opened CIAA play at the CIAA Softball Roundup this weekend. The Lady Bears went 3-1, ending a 14-game losing streak.
Shaw garnered victories over Virginia Union, Virginia State and Saint Paul's, while dropping their fourth game to Elizabeth City State University. After this weekend's action, the Lady Bears stand at 3-15, but 3-1 in the CIAA.
Two scheduled games – against Bowie State and Lincoln (PA) were postponed because of sloppy field conditions. Those games will be rescheduled at a later date.
Shaw broke their 14-game losing streak by defeating Virginia Union 14-8 in a game begun on Friday, suspended by weather, and completed Saturday.
Cinnamon Morrow (left) walked ten, but gave up only three hits in the win. Morrow helped her own cause by scoring four runs – all without getting a hit. She reached base on three walks and an error. Curtisha Jones went two for three, earned a base on balls, and scored three runs for the Lady Bears.
Capitalizing on a four-run second inning, the Lady Bears downed Saint Paul's 13-11. Monica Grimmage scored four runs on only two hits – reaching base on both a fielder's choice and walk, as well. She drove in one run as well. Morrow was the winning pitcher on the complete game.
Morrow also pitched all seven innings of the third game, besting Virginia State 4-2. She gave up only six hits and struck out four in the performance. The Lady Bears collected only four hits in the game, but took advantage of three Virginia State errors.
The Lady Bears closed out the weekend with a 14-6 loss to Elizabeth City State. Erica Lafrades drove in two runs on a two for four performance in the game. Erneisha Cooper was two for three, stole two bases and scored a run for the Lady Bears in defeat.
The Lady Bears return to action Wednesday when they host Chowan for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. Shaw plays its softball games at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex at 1201 Sunnybrook Drive in Raleigh. For more information, go to www.shawu.edu.
