HIGH POINT, N.C. — The Shaw University women's track and field team turned in several strong performances April 2–3 at the VertKlasse Meeting, hosted by High Point University, highlighted by personal bests and solid efforts across distance, sprints, and field events.
Freshman Galicia Monforte led the Bears in distance competition, finishing 29th in the 5,000 meters with a personal-best time of 19:56.07. Monforte also competed in the 10,000 meters, placing fifth overall in a time of 43:57.08, earning Shaw's top finish of the meet in a championship race.
In the field events, senior Ashanti Wright delivered a pair of notable performances. Wright recorded a personal-best mark of 41.85 meters in the javelin throw, finishing 11th, and added an 11.34-meter effort in the triple jump.
Senior Kimmley Johnson competed in multiple disciplines for the Bears, highlighted by a personal best of 1.57 meters (5-1¾) in the high jump during elite competition. Johnson also posted a mark of 10.68 meters in the triple jump.
Shaw's sprinters continued to build momentum during the outdoor season. Junior Shaneil Johnson ran a personal-best 58.07 seconds in the 400 meters, while also competing in the 200 meters with a time of 25.29.
Junior Eva Baana recorded personal bests in both the 100 meters (13.97) and the 200 meters (28.28). Junior Reginae Bastian finished the 200 meters in 28.64 seconds and added a season-best 1:10.75 in the 400 meters.
Junior Gracyonna Robinson posted a season-best 1:07.21 in the 400 meters, while freshman Jazzmen Robinson clocked 1:11.54 in the same event. Sophomore Shaianne Wiley turned in a personal-best performance of 2:30.67 in the 100-meter hurdles.
The VertKlasse Meeting featured a deep field of Division I, Division II, and club programs from across the region, providing valuable experience as the Bears continue to prepare for upcoming CIAA and postseason competition.
