Broncos Overpower Lady Bears

FAYETTEVILLE, NC --Mikyah Finley, Skylar Adams and D'Ayzha Atkinson combined to score 28 of Shaw's 37 total points, but the Lady Bears fell to the Fayetteville State Broncos 73-37 on the road Monday.

Atkinson led the Lady Bears (7-13, 5-8) with nine points, four assists and two steals. Mahogany Collins also tacked on nine rebounds and three blocks and Finley helped out with 10 points.

Collins pulled down four offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Shaw, grabbing 15 boards and turning them into eight second chance points.

Shaw forced 14 Fayetteville State turnovers while committing 13 themselves in Monday's game. The Lady Bears turned those takeaways into nine points on the other end of the floor. Atkinson's two steals led the way for Shaw.

How It Happened

After falling behind 16-4, Shaw went on a 5-0 run with 41 seconds left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Finley, to narrow its deficit to 16-9, a score that would hold for the rest of the period.

The Lady Bears continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 39-18 halftime deficit.

Shaw's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Lady Bears faced a 58-23 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Shaw turned four offensive rebounds into three second chance points on the way to scoring five total points in the quarter.

Fayetteville State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 61-25 advantage before Shaw went on a 6-0 run to shrink the deficit to 61-31 with 8:05 to go in the contest. Fayetteville State responded and outscored the Lady Bears the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 73-37. Shaw got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring 12 of its 14 total points.
