CHARLOTTE, NC --The Shaw women's basketball team held Johnson C. Smith to just 37.7 percent shooting from the field, but fell 50-42 to the Golden Bulls on the road Wednesday.
Mikyah Finley led the Lady Bears (6-10, 4-5) with 13 points and two steals. D'Ayzha Atkinson added seven points, seven rebounds and two steals and Sokhna Toure helped out with four points, seven rebounds and two steals.
Led by Toure's five offensive rebounds, Shaw did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 16 boards that resulted in six second chance points.
The Shaw defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Wednesday's game, forcing 19 Johnson C. Smith turnovers while committing 11. Those takeaways turned into 12 points on the offensive end of the floor. Toure's two steals led the way individually for the Lady Bears.
How It Happened
Shaw kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 15-13.
The Lady Bears continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 26-22 halftime deficit.
Shaw's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Bears faced a 39-33 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Shaw took advantage of three Johnson C. Smith turnovers in the quarter, scoring three points off of takeaways.
Shaw could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 50-42. Shaw took advantage of seven Johnson C. Smith turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of those takeaways.
