RALEIGH, NC --The Shaw men's basketball team had 13 fewer turnovers than Virginia State, but fell 90-76 to the Trojans at home Monday.
The Bears (6-5) had four players score in double figures, led by Trent McIntyre, who had 17 points, six rebounds and four steals. Justin Harris added 13 points off the bench and Dreveon Scott helped out with 11 points and three steals.
Jermaine Vereen pulled down four offensive rebounds to pace the Shaw offense which grabbed 16 boards and turned them into 15 second chance points.
The Shaw defense was a problem in Monday's game, forcing 23 Virginia State turnovers while committing 10. Those takeaways turned into 19 points on the offensive end of the floor. McIntyre's four steals led the way individually for the Bears.
How It Happened
Shaw struggled out of the gate, falling behind 46-27 heading into halftime.
Shaw narrowed its deficit to 78-61 before going on a 7-0 run to shrink the deficit to 78-68 with 2:13 to go in the contest. Virginia State responded and outscored the Bears the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 90-76. Shaw got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 14 of its 49 total points.
