RALEIGH, NC --Five Bears scored in double figures and Shaw defeated the Barton Bulldogs 79-76 at home Tuesday.
The Bears (4-3) had five players score in double figures, led by Trent McIntyre, who had 19 points, five assists and two steals. Dee Barnes added 14 points and Jermaine Vereen helped out with 13 points, seven rebounds and four blocks.
Shaw grabbed 40 rebounds in Tuesday's game compared to Barton's 35, led by 10 boards from Elijah Scranton. The Bears also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 17 rebounds into 15 second chance points.
Shaw's defense held Barton to only 38.1 percent shooting from the field.
How It Happened
After falling behind 13-12, Shaw went on an 11-0 run with 13:26 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from McIntyre, to take a 23-13 lead. The Bears then added two points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 45-33 advantage. Shaw capitalized on 12 Barton turnovers in the period, turning them into 16 points on the other end of the floor.
Shaw kept its lead intact before going on a 5-0 run to grow the lead to 52-36 with 17:38 to go in the contest. The Bulldogs narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Bears still held on for the 79-76 win after Barton's three-point shot to tie the game at the buzzer went off the rim.
Shaw got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 12 of its 34 total points.
