RALEIGH, NC --Five Bears scored in double digits and Shaw took down the JWU Charlotte Wildcats 81-75 at home Saturday.
The Bears (3-3) had five players score in double figures, led by Ellija Preddy, who had 15 points. Jermaine Vereen added a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Dreveon Scott helped out with 14 points, eight rebounds and three steals.
Elijah Scranton pulled down seven offensive rebounds to pace the Shaw offense which grabbed 20 boards and turned them into 24 second chance points.
Shaw forced 19 JWU Charlotte turnovers while committing 12 themselves in Saturday's game. The Bears turned those takeaways into 25 points on the offensive end of the floor. Scranton's four steals led the way for Shaw.
How It Happened
After playing to a 4-4 tie, Shaw went on a 9-0 run with 17:28 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Vereen, to take a 13-4 lead. The Bears then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 37-32 advantage. Shaw relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 37 points.
Shaw kept its lead intact before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Trent McIntyre's jumper, to grow the lead to 73-61 with 4:56 to go in the contest. The Wildcats narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Bears still cruised the rest of the way for the 81-75 win. Shaw capitalized on 10 JWU Charlotte turnovers in the period, collecting 11 points off those turnovers.
