RALEIGH, NC --The Shaw men's basketball team kept Mid-Atlantic Christian to just 7.7 percent from deep in a 1-for-13 shooting performance on the way to a 67-42 win over the Mustangs at home Wednesday.
The game was called with under five minutes remaining due to wet floor conditions.Â
The Bears (2-3) had four players score in double figures, led by Ellija Preddy, who had 16 points and four steals. Darius Abraham added 12 points and Dreveon Scott helped out with 12 points and two steals.
The Shaw offense was very productive from deep, pouring in nine threes on 20 attempts. Abraham was the most prolific shooter for the Bears, draining four treys in the contest.
The Shaw defense held Mid-Atlantic Christian shooters to just 31.2 percent from the field, including 7.7 percent from three-point range.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 17-14 advantage, Shaw went on a 9-0 run with 7:38 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Justin Harris, to increase its lead to 26-14. The Bears then added two points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 38-24 advantage. Shaw relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down six shots to account for 18 of its 38 points.
Following intermission, Shaw kept widening that lead, expanding it to 54-38 before going on a 10-0 run, finished off by Daniel Mbaeteka's jumper, to grow the lead to 64-38 with 6:44 to go in the contest. The Mustangs narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Bears still cruised the rest of the way for the 67-42 win. Shaw got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for nine of its 29 total points.
