ELIZABETH CITY, NC --The Shaw men's basketball team kept Elizabeth City State to just 19 percent from beyond the arc in a 4-for-21 shooting performance, but fell 71-65 to the Vikings on the road Tuesday.
The Bears (7-6, 3-2) had two players score in double figures, led by Ahmil Flowers, who had 15 points. Dj Thomas added 14 points and three steals and Trent McIntyre added four points and three steals.
The Shaw defense was a problem in Tuesday's game, forcing 16 Elizabeth City State turnovers while committing six. Those takeaways turned into 19 points on the other end of the floor. McIntyre's three steals led the way individually for the Bears.
How It Happened
After falling behind 10-9, Shaw went on a 7-0 run with 13:38 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Corey Rutherford, to take a 16-10 lead. The Bears then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 37-30.
Elizabeth City State kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 53-45 advantage before Shaw went on a 5-0 run to shrink the deficit to 53-50 with 7:08 to go in the contest. Elizabeth City State responded and outscored the Bears the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 71-65. Shaw took care of business in the paint, recording 20 of its 35 points in the lane.
