CHARLOTTE, NC --DJ Thomas scored 24 points, but the Shaw men's basketball team fell to the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls 76-73 on the road Tuesday evening in a CIAA Southern Division matchup inside Brayboy Gymnasium.
Thomas' 24 point effort led the Bears (10-9, 6-5). Shayne Saigo helped out with 15 points, nine rebounds and three steals and KJ West chipped in with 10 points and three steals.
How It Happened
Shaw started out the scoring by going on an 11-0 run, culminating in a three from Thomas, to take an early lead with 16:45 left in the first half. The Bears then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 39-27 advantage.
Shaw kept its lead intact before going on a 10-0 run, finished off by Thomas' layup, to grow the lead to 52-38 with 15:47 to go in the contest. Johnson C. Smith then asserted control, outscoring the Bears 38-21 the rest of the way to hand Shaw the 76-73 loss. Shaw took care of business in the paint, recording 18 of its 34 points in the lane.
