Big Plays, Big Hits Highlight Shaw Spring Football Game

Jon Barnes Catches TD Pass In Shaw Spring Game
RALEIGH, N.C. (April 15) – The Shaw University football team capped the spring season with a very spirited Spring Football Game at Durham County Stadium on Saturday.

Team Shaw defeated Team Bears 22-14 in a thrilling intrasquad contest. It featured big hits and highlight-reel plays, such as Christian Peters' 75-yard touchdown run on a quarterback draw in the fourth quarter. It was fitting that his score was the last play of an exciting game, which had a combined 442 offensive yards.

Not to be outshined, the defense forced a fumble and held the offense to a 4 of 12 third-down conversion rate.

"We had some explosive plays on offense," Head Coach Adrian Jones said. "Defense did a good job causing a fumble in the red zone. If we can score on our defense, we are going to be pretty good."

Peters produced two touchdown runs, one for each team, and threw a long scoring pass to Jon Barnes. Patrick Blake found Andre Brandon for a score and Silas Cruse fired a touchdown pass as the quarterbacks played for both teams. Karlton Byrd added a 30-yard field goal.

Defensively, Jaden Boyd had six tackles, Jaden Jones finished with four stops and Elijah Adams collected three tackles including two sacks.

Team Shaw consisted of the first-team offense and second-team defense while Team Bears included the first-team defense and second-team offense.
Spring season is officially over but the workouts don't stop, however.

"We have to keep our bodies healthy," Peters said. "We don't want to sit too long. That might mess you up for the season. Everybody doing the same thing every day is going to form that camaraderie that you want on the team."

The Bears open the regular season on the road against Benedict on Sept. 2 in Columbia, S.C. Kickoff is 6 p.m.

Their home opener is Sept. 9 versus Virginia Union at 1 p.m.
