RICHMOND, VA -- The Shaw women's basketball team fell 71-52 to the East Stroudsburg (PA) Warriors in the season opener at Barco-Stevens Hall on Friday. This was the first day of the CIAA/PSAC Classic.
The Lady Bears had two players score in double figures, led by Mikyah Finley with 13 points and five steals. Alliyah Chaplin added 10 points and Alexis Radcliff chipped in nine points and three blocks.
Shaw forced 19 East Stroudsburg (PA) turnovers which turned into 19 points. Finley's five steals led the way for the Lady Bears.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 3-2 advantage, Shaw went on an 8-0 run with 8:17 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Finley, to increase its lead to 11-2. East Stroudsburg (PA) then responded to tie the game at 13-13 heading into the second quarter. Shaw relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 13 points.
East Stroudsburg (PA) then took a 26-18 lead before Shaw responding by going on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a three from Indiya Spooner, to narrow its deficit to 26-23. East Stroudsburg (PA) responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Lady Bears trailing 30-25 heading into halftime.
East Stroudsburg (PA) continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 36-27 advantage before Shaw went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Chaplin, to trim its deficit to 36-32 with 7:07 to go in the third. East Stroudsburg (PA) countered and stretched its lead to 51-39 heading into the fourth.
Shaw could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 71-52.
