Bears Comeback Falls Short Against Wayne State

Box Score

Detroit, MI – The Shaw University football team has shown in both weeks of the season so far that they will fight until the last second. That was on display again tonight as the Bears mounted a furious comeback but fell short against the Wayne State University Warriors 30-22 Saturday night at Tom Adams Field.

How It Happened

1st Quarter

After a quick three and out from the Shaw (0-2) offense, a slightly blocked punt set up WSU (1-1) in good field position. The Warriors needed just five plays to score on a trick play to go ahead 7-0 early in the contest. Another Shaw punt followed before WSU connected on a 48-yard field goal pushing their lead to 10-0 with 55 seconds left in the quarter.

2nd Quarter

The Bears were finally able to put together a decent drive before a strip sack gave the ball back to WSU. The Shaw defense tightened up to hold the Warriors to a short field goal making the score 13-0 with just over four minutes left before the break. The Bears offense put together their best drive of the half getting inside the 15 before coming up empty on 4th down with under a minute left leaving the score 13-0 at the half.

3rd Quarter

Shaw forced a WSU punt to open the half before going on their best drive of the game going 80 yards in 9 plays capped off by a 29-yard touchdown run by Sidney Gibbs. Armaan Nagra added the PAT to cut the Bears deficit to 13-7 with 8:33 remaining in the quarter. The Warriors answered the bell with an 8-play 67-yard scoring drive that ended on a 7-yard score to make the score 20-7 with just over five minutes left in the third. Shaw put together another impressive drive that ended in a turnover inside the Warriors 25-yard line.

4th Quarter

WSU added to their lead with another rushing score after the Shaw turnover to go ahead 27-7 with less than a minute gone in the final quarter. The Bears wouldn't quit as Shaw found the endzone from 48 yards out as Peters found a wide-open Jon Barnes. Nagra's PAT made the score 27-14 with just over 10 minutes left in the game.  WSU used a short field after a good kick return to add three more points with 6:54 remaining making the score 30-14.

Shaw wouldn't go away as Peters led the Bears on an 8-play 86-yard drive in 1:45 minutes that ended with an Andre Brandon Jr one-yard score followed by an amazing two-point conversion from Peters slicing the Shaw deficit to 30-22.
