PETERSBURG, VA --The Shaw men's basketball team held Carolina University to just 13.3 percent from 3-point range in a 4-for-30 shooting performance on the way to an 82-41 victory at the VSU Multipurpose Center Sunday.
The Bears (3-5) had four players score in double figures, led by Jeremiah Pope, who had 12 points. Denari Garrett added 12 points and two steals and Justus Baldwin helped out with 11 points and four assists from the bench.
Shaw's defense held Carolina University to only 24.1 percent shooting from the field during the contest.Â
How It Happened
After playing to a 4-4 tie, Shaw went on a 15-0 run with 16:39 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Baldwin, to take a 19-4 lead. The Bears then added two points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 35-18 advantage. Shaw did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 20 of its 35 points close to the basket.
Following intermission, Shaw kept widening that lead, expanding it to 60-34 before going on a 10-0 run to grow the lead to 70-34 with 5:44 to go in the contest. The Bears kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 82-41 win. Shaw shot well from three-point range in the half, hitting eight shots from deep to score 24 of its 47 points.
