Raleigh, NC --Brittney Seymour and Tanayja London both recorded double-doubles to help lead the Shaw women's basketball team past the Kentucky State Thorobreds 60-49 at home Sunday.
The double-doubles by Seymour, who had 18 points and 10 rebounds, and London, who had 14 points and 11 rebounds, led the Lady Bears (1-3) in the contest. Makenzie Pollard helped out with 17 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Shaw collected 48 rebounds in Sunday's game compared to Kentucky State's 40, led by London's 11 boards. The Lady Bears also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 17 rebounds into 12 second chance points.
Shaw's defense held Kentucky State to only 16.7 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 31.7 percent from the field. The Lady Bears also limited Naja Fenelon to 1-of-7 shooting from downtown and eight points in the game.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 4-3 advantage, Shaw went on a 6-0 run with 6:59 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Pollard, to increase its lead to 10-3. The Lady Bears then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 20-12 advantage. Shaw relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 20 points.
Shaw built that first quarter lead to 26-15 before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 6:09 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Tanashia Hairston, to increase its lead to 32-15. The Thorobreds cut into that lead, but the Lady Bears still enjoyed a 39-26 advantage heading into halftime.
Shaw continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Seymour, to expand its lead further to 48-32 with 4:51 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Thorobreds had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Lady Bears still entered the fourth quarter with a 48-37 edge. Shaw turned 11 offensive rebounds into four second chance points on the way to scoring nine total points in the quarter.
The Lady Bears then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter.
