Box Score Lincoln, PA - The Shaw University Lady Bears continue to play their best basketball of the season which was evident as the Lady Bears defeated regionally ranked Lincoln University (PA) 74-65 Wednesday evening inside Manuel Rivero Gymnasium.
The score would be knotted at 5-5 after three minutes of play after baskets from Jordan Strange and Ashley Rojas. Shaw (8-9, 5-3 CIAA) would find themselves trailing at the 4:42 media timeout 9-7 but pulled ahead 10-9 with a basket from Nyrobi Pillers with the assist credited to Cherelle Washington. Lincoln (13-5, 6-2 CIAA) would respond to push back ahead by just one point 13-12 at the end of the first.
Makenzie Pollard knocked down a three from the elbow to put the Lady Bears back in front 17-15. Pollard cashed in another three in the corner out of the media timeout to up the Lady Bears lead to 22-15. Tanayja London's offensive rebound and putback made the score 26-19 in favor of Shaw. Inari Jones split a pair at the line extending the Shaw lead to 33-23 at halftime.
Both teams opened the third quarter exchanging three-point shots. Rojas scored inside followed by another thee from Lincoln trimmed the Lady Bears lead to 38-29. Another three-point basket from the Lions cut the Shaw lead to just six before a London basket ended the Lions run. Pillers answered with a rebound and putback to give Shaw a 47-38 lead with just over three minutes left in the quarter. The Lady Bears responded with baskets from Washington and Inari Jones to extend the Shaw lead to 55-42 after three complete.
The Lions opened the quarter on a 5-0 sprint to slice the Shaw lead to 55-47 with 8:14 remaining. Back-to-back fast break baskets from London and Pollard pushed the Lady Bears lead back up to double digits at 61-49. Lincoln answered again out the timeout to cut their deficit to 61-55 before Amani Moxley ended the run with a short jumper. The Lady Bears lead stood at 67-58 with 3:00 left. The lead shrunk to 67-65 before Washington added two free throws to make the score 69-65 with 1:25 remaining.
London made her biggest basket of the night picking up a loose ball and scoring with just 36.1 left and the Lady Bears ahead 71-65. The Lady Bears closed out the game at the charity stripe to pick up the important road win.
Washington led four Lady Bears in double figures with 14 points with Pillers and Strange following with 13 points. Pollard added 12 points.
Shaw continues their road trip with a stop in Richmond, VA to take on Virginia Union University Saturday, January 29. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
