Box Score Raleigh, NC - The Shaw University Lady Bears picked up their third win in their last four contest as they defeated the Bowie State University Bulldogs 62-53 in a CIAA Northern Division matchup Saturday afternoon inside historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
The Lady Bears (7-9, 3-3 CIAA) got on the board first going ahead 4-0 to start the contest before Bowie State (5-8, 3-3 CIAA) battled back to tie the game at 6-6. The game stayed tight until the first media timeout with Shaw holding a slim 10-9 lead. Neither team got much going on offense as the quarter closed with the Lady Bears still ahead by just one 14-13.
BSU started the second period on a tear to go ahead briefly 19-18 followed by 22-20 due to back-to-back three-point baskets. Ashley Rojas tied the game at 22 with a drive and finish at the basket with 6:20 left in the first half. After trailing by three, the Lady Bears answered with a 4-0 run to retake the lead at 26-25 with a basket from Nyrobi Pillers. Tanayja London beat the buzzer with a short jumper to tie the game at 28 at halftime.
Things remained close to open the second half with Shaw holding a 32-30 lead with 6:40 left in the third quarter. Baskets from Rojas and London pushed the Shaw lead to six with just over six minutes remaining in the quarter. Not much changed the rest of the quarter with Shaw holding on to a seven-point lead 45-38 after three complete.
London opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back baskets to push the Shaw lead to 49-40 before a BSU basket ended the run as the Bulldogs took a timeout with 7:31 left. Leading 53-45 at the 4:55 media timeout, Shaw pushed their lead up to 58-48 with 3:11 remaining. The Lady Bears maintained their lead for the remainder of the contest cruising to a 62-53 home victory.
London paced the Lady Bears with 20 points to lead all scorers. Rojas followed with 12 points and 6 rebounds. For the game, Shaw shot 41% from the floor while going an impressive 24-31 from the charity stripe.
The Lady Bears will now take a few day's rests and travel for a two-game road trip with their first matchup being against Lincoln on Wednesday, January 26. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. from Lincoln, PA.
