Bears Travel to Lincoln (PA) for CIAA Opener

Raleigh, NC – The Shaw University football team will travel to Coatesville, PA to battle the Lions of Lincoln University in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) cross division tilt Saturday, September 25. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. inside Coatesville Memorial Stadium.

Updates will be available on all Shaw athletic social media platforms and can be seen live on the CIAA Sports Network.

Shaw enters the contest at 1-2 overall most recently picking up their first win of the season in dominating fashion blanking Central State 52-0 in their home opener last Saturday, September 18. In the previous weeks, the Bears dropped back-to-back contest to nationally ranked Wingate (30-7) and FCS Davidson (28-26).

Saturday's contest will be the third road game in the early season as the Bears will also travel next weekend to Richmond, VA to face Virginia Union making Shaw's first four out five contests on the road.

The Bears are led on offense by redshirt freshman quarterback Christian Peters who has accounted for three touchdowns in each of his last two starts for Shaw. In an abbreviated role last Saturday, Peters finished 13-17 for 136 yards and two touchdowns while running for another score early in the third period. Peters has completed 67% of his passes through three games for five touchdowns to just one interception. Shaw's ground game features sophomore running back Sidney Gibbs who turned in his second straight 100-yard performance against Central State finishing with 150 yards on just 14 carries. On the year, Gibbs is averaging 7.6 yards per carry.

The Shaw defense is led by former CIAA DPOTY winner Devon Hunt who averages 10.3 tackles per outing.  Behind Hunt is fellow grad senior Jaleel Scroggins at 5.3 tackles per game while also collecting his first interception of the season against Central State. The stingy Shaw run defense managed to hold the Central State offense to just 48 yards rushing while also forcing four turnovers.

Lincoln come into Saturday's matchup in search of their first victory on the 2021 season at 0-3 overall. In their most recent outing, the Lions fell on the road 56-0 to FCS Gardner Webb. Lincoln was held to just seven first downs during the came and 75 yards of total offense.

Lincoln and Shaw share a common opponent in Central State as Lincoln fell to CSU 19-7 earlier this month on September 11.  The Lions are led by head coach Josh Dean.

Overall in the series between the Bears and Lions, Shaw owns a 3-1 lead since Lincoln joined the CIAA while Lions were able to end a three-game losing streak against Shaw with a 20-10 victory over the Bears on September 26, 2015.
