Box Score Raleigh, NC – A 28-6 third quarter run by Fayetteville State built a lead that was too much to overcome as the Broncos raced past the Shaw University Lady Bears 80-49 in the CIAA opener for both squads Wednesday night inside historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.

The Broncos shot a blazing 55% and 58% during the second half finishing 45% for the contest. Shaw was limited to just 37% shooting for the game including 4-19 from beyond the arc. Both teams combined for 40 turnovers with Shaw committing 22.
How It Happened
First Quarter
The Lady Bears jumped out to an early 7-3 lead with five early points from Makenzie Pollard before a basket from Jaleesa Dillard forced an FSU timeout with Shaw ahead 9-3 with 6:09 remaining in the first quarter. FSU tied the game at 13 with a three-point basket before going ahead 15-13 with 2:45 left in the opening period. Baskets from Cherelle Washington and Amani Moxley put the Lady Bears ahead 17-15 at the end of the quarter.
Second Quarter
The Broncos opened a 22-17 lead early in the second quarter before Moxley ended the FSU run with a basket inside cutting their deficit to three points. Outside shooting propelled FSU ahead 27-21 at the under-five media timeout. The Lady Bears remained close with a late basket from Pollard making the score 31-27 at the half in favor of FSU.
Third Quarter
A quick 4-0 run FSU made the score 35-27 before Pollard ended the run with a deep three-point basket. The game of runs continued as another Broncos run extended their lead to 43-30 with the help of a few Shaw turnovers with 5:00 left in the quarter. The run continued as the Broncos lead grew to 53-31 before the quarter closed with Shaw trailing 58-33.
Fourth Quarter
Things remained the same during the final stanza with the Lady Bears falling behind 68-36. Both teams traded baskets during the final minutes of play, but the deficit was too big to carve into leading to an 80-49 final score.
Shaw returns to the court Saturday, December 18 as they host Claflin University in a morning CIAA showdown. Tipoff is scheduled for 11 am inside C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
