Raleigh, NC – The Shaw University football team will face crosstown rival St. Augustine's University in the annual Raleigh Classic Saturday, November 6 in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division matchup.
Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. inside the George Williams Athletic Complex on the campus of St. Augustine's University and can be seen on the CIAA Sports Network. Shaw is the designated visiting team for the matchup.
Shaw (6-3 overall, 5-1 CIAA, 3-1 South) returns to action after defeating Winston-Salem State University 38-14 last Saturday on senior day. The Bears jumped out to a 10-0 lead before falling behind 14-10 at halftime. Shaw proceeded to outscore WSSU 28-0 in the second half cruising to the home finale victory.
Quarterback Torrin Campbell finished with three passing touchdowns as the Shaw ground game which ranks first in the CIAA totaled 261 yards with running back Sidney Gibbs leading the way with 151 yards on 20 carries. On the season, the Bears are averaging 190 yards rushing per contest. Ah'Shaan Belcher has been a bright spot in the receiving department leading the way with 415 yards receiving on 27 catches and five touchdowns leading the Bears in all categories.
The Shaw defense continues to be a force on the season limiting opponents to just 266 total yards which ranks third in the CIAA while giving up just 10.8 points per game which ranks second overall in the CIAA. The Bears leader in tackles Devon Hunt also leads the CIAA with 76 total tackles with eight of those being for a loss. Da'shawn Wallace follows with 41 with Kevin Sherman adding 39 tackles. Sherman, who was recently named the CIAA's Defensive Back of The Week also leads the Bears with three interceptions.
SAU (0-7 overall, 0-6 CIAA, 0-4 South) most recently fell to JCSU 34-13 last Saturday in Charlotte, NC. The Falcons trailed 14-7 at halftime before JCSU scored 14 points in the third quarter to pull away for their first win of the season.
The Falcons average 9.6 points per game while allowing 35.7 points while averaging 214.3 yards on offense. The SAU defense yields 429.3 yards per game.
