Box Score Wilson, NC - The Shaw University Lady Bears ran into an offensive juggernaut from the opening tip and were unable to keep the pace as the Lady Bears dropped an 84-55 bout to Barton College Wednesday evening inside Wilson Gymnasium.
Shaw falls to 0-3 with the defeat while the Bulldogs remain perfect at 3-0.
Shaw went ahead 2-0 early with a steal and basket from Charelle Washington before Barton answered with a 7-0 run. Washington connected on a three-point play cutting the Lady Bears deficit to 8-7 at the first media timeout of the quarter. Another Bulldogs run pushed their lead up to 20-9 before a slew of turnovers allowed Barton to go ahead 29-9 at the end of the first.
After a long scoring drought, Washington added back-to-back three-point baskets to make the score 40-17 early in the second quarter. Inari Jones nailed a three to slice the Barton lead to 45-24 with 2:40 remaining in the half. Both teams traded threes with Shaw's coming from Ashley Rojas finished with a crossover and basket. Baskets from both teams just before the half made the Shaw deficit 50-27 at the half.
Neither offense started out hot after halftime with the scoreboard showing 56-27 with 3:30 left in the third quarter. Shaw would outscore Barton 24-23 in the final period showing fight until the very end.
Three Lady Bears finished in double-figure scoring with Washington leading the way with 11 points. Makenzie Pollard and Taliyah Rahman followed with 10 points each.
Shaw returns to action Friday at the Capital City Classic played on the campus of St. Augustine's University where the Lady Bears will face Virginia University of Lynchburg. Tipoff is slated for 5 p.m.
