Box Score BOWIE, Md. – The Shaw University women's basketball team could not hold off a second half comeback from the Bowie State University as the Lady Bears were outscored 27-14 in a 42-33 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) setback to the Bulldogs Saturday afternoon at the A.C. Jordan Arena.
The loss dips the Lady Bears to 6-11 overall and 2-7 in the CIAA while Bowie State improves to 15-2 on the year and 5-1 in conference action.
Both teams did not shoot well from the field. Shaw was responsible for 29.5-percent (13-44), connecting 4-of-15 shots from the 3-point line but only going to the line six times for 50-percent. Meanwhile, Bowie State shot 27.6-percent (16-58), 0-10 from long distance but connected 10-of-11 from the charity stripe.
Junior guard Tyra Sinclair (Laurel, MD) led Shaw in scoring with 10 points off the bench while senior guard Dejoria "DJ" Howard (Orangeburg, SC) added nine points. Junior forward Diamonique Kennedy (Beggs, OK) grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds and four points.
Shaw trailed Bowie State, 8-5 after the first quarter but the Lady Bears caught fire in the second capped off by a 9-3 run in the last 2:11 to go into the locker room with a 19-15 lead at halftime.
Although Shaw outscored the Bulldogs 14-7 in the second quarter, momentum shifted in favor of Bowie State as the Bulldogs stole the lead by scoring nine unanswered points to stand 28-21 over the Lady Bears with 4:03 left in the third quarter. A layup from junior guard Keyonte Cherry (Rocky Mount, NC) pulled Shaw within six points at the end the period.
The Lady Bears closed the gap to five points after a 3-pointer from Kennedy with under six minutes remaining, but the Bulldogs would not relinquish on the lead, producing an 8-4 scoring frame in the final four minutes of the contest for the win.
Dynaisha Christian led all scorers with 15 points and 19 rebounds while Talanya Hutton chipped in 12 points and eight boards.
Shaw will return to action Monday; Jan. 20 as the Lady Bears return home to host Virginia Union University in a non-conference contest slated for 6 p.m. inside the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
