MURFREESBORO, N.C. – In probably one of the most electrifying games in the Jones' era, the Shaw University football team rattled off a 41-point scoring frame from the Chowan University Hawks in the second half to secure a 48-47 victory on the road at the Garrison Stadium in double overtime for the NCAA Division II Football Showcase Saturday night.
The Bears (1-2, 1-0 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) looked brilliant in the first half, taking a 27-0 lead at halftime. But tonight's game would be a tale of two halves, as the Hawks came out the third quarter with a 28-6 scoring advantage that pulled them within five entering the fourth quarter.
The Hawks (1-2, 0-1 CIAA) stole the lead from the Bears on a four yard reception TD from Dominic Floyd with 9:41 left, providing a 34-33 edge in favor of the Hawks. As momentum continued to shift in favor of the Hawks, Chowan's Deshaun Wethingthon went untouched for a four yard rushing scamper in the end zone, adding to the Hawks scoring margin (41-33) with 6:49 remaining in regulation.
Shaw then responded, led by senior quarterback Torrin Campbell (Toledo, OH) who found a wide open senior and tight end in Kevonta Moses (Fort Myers, FL) for a Bears touchdown that knotted the contest at 41-even after senior kicker Beni Kinsemi's (Charlotte, NC) good extra point attempt as 48 seconds showed on the clock, eventually sending the game into overtime.
Neither teams found the end zone in the extra session, forcing the games second OT. But the good news for the Bears was that Shaw scored first after Campbell threw a Hail Mary to junior wide receiver Daniel Bender (Jacksonville, FL) for a 25 yard TD reception.
Holding a 48-41 lead for Shaw, the Bears defense had a chance to seal the game but the Hawks answered on a 13 yard reception TD from Brian Hooper, Jr. However, instead of going for the extra point, CU decided to go for two and a dropped pass in the end zone sealed the victory for the Bears – its first win of the season and first conference win.
Campbell finished with 316 total yards of offense on 23-of-41 passes, throwing three interceptions and four touchdowns. Freshman running back Sidney Gibbs (Black Mountain, NC) carried the ball 20 times for 82 yards and two TD's while Moses had a solid game with six receptions worth 55 yards and two touchdowns. Additionally, Bender added two scores on five catches and 47 yards.
Defensively, junior defensive back Jaleel Scroggins (Raleigh, NC) aided a team-high 10 tackles and a tackle for loss, followed by junior defensive back Kevin Sherman (Powder Springs, GA) with eight tackles and two interceptions.
Offensively, the Bears finished with 420 yards of offense while the Hawks put up 429 total yards of offense.
Shaw will return to action Saturday, Sept. 28, when the Bears host Edward Waters for a non-conference tilt at the George Williams Athletic Complex. Kickoff is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. for Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day.
