LADY BEARS FALL TO JOHNSON C. SMITH IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE

RALEIGH, N.C.   Three Shaw University women's basketball players scored in double figures but the visiting Johnson C. Smith University Golden Bulls defeated the Lady Bears, 85-56 in its regular season finale Saturday afternoon inside the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.

Saturday's contest was senior day as the Lady Bears honored three seniors after the completion of the contest that included Raquel Kellow (Conroe, TX), Tahniya Sweatt (Pasadena, CA) and KlinTisha Martin (Atlanta, GA).

Kellow paced Shaw in scoring with a season-high 14 points while junior Macy Keen (Fort Lauderdale, FL) registered her 12th double-double of the year with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Martin would chip in 11 points and eight rebounds in the effort for Shaw.

The Lady Bears stayed close with JCSU throughout the first half which led to just a seven point deficit at the break but in the second half, the Golden Bulls used a 12-8 scoring spread to lead by 11 points (50-39) with 3:04 left in the third quarter.

Shaw trailed 56-42 entering the fourth quarter and was never able to cut the Golden Bulls lead to single digits as JCSU outscored the Lady Bears 29-14 to take the win over SU.

Five players finished in double figure scoring for JCSU led by Blaire Thomas who tallied 19 points and five rebounds. Malia Rovers added 11 points while Maiya Green, DeJane' James and Aubriana Bonner contributed 10 points apiece.

Shaw concludes the regular season 7-21 overall, 2-16 in the CIAA and 1-11 in the Southern Division. The Lady Bears will likely be the No. 7th seed in the 2019 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Basketball Tournament beginning on Monday, Feb. 25 in Charlotte, N.C. at the Bojangles Coliseum. The Lady Bears will likely face the No. 6 seed of the CIAA North.

As for JCSU, they improve to 16-12 overall, 14-5 CIAA and 9-3 in the South good for the No. 2 seed in the tournament of the Southern Division.

An official bracket of the 2019 CIAA Women's Basketball Tournament will be completed later on this evening.
