RALEIGH, N.C. – Shaw University capped off its season finale with a 24-21 victory over crosstown rival Saint Augustine's at the George Williams Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon to claim its second-straight Raleigh Classic trophy.

The Bears led 10-7 at halftime, senior wide receiver Marquis Gorham (Greenville, NC) broke away from SAU defenders in the game's first minute with a 56-yard reception TD to give Shaw a 7-0 lead. A 40-yard field goal from senior kicker and punter Beni Kinsemi (Charlotte, NC) provided Shaw with a 10-0 lead before the Falcons cut the Bears lead to three on a 29-yard reception touchdown with under 2:00 left in the first half.

The game went back and forth in the third quarter when the Falcons converted on a 14-yard reception with 10:19 left as SAU took a 14-10 lead over Shaw at the conclusion of the third stanza.

In the first three minutes of the fourth quarter, junior quarterback Torrin Campbell (Toledo, OH) found an open senior tight end Kevonta Moses (Fort Myers, FL) in the end zone to regain the lead for Shaw with 11:53 left in regulation.

The Falcons then used seven-play drive worth 65-yards to take the lead over Shaw at 21-17 with under 10:00 remaining. The Bears never looked distraught, as they Gorham broke away from Falcon defenders for a 41-yard catch and huge first down for Shaw. After a 17-yard rush for freshman Sydney Gibbs (Black Mountain, NC), Campbell found a wide open Moses in the end zone for a two-yard pass completion and a 24-21 lead over SAU with 4:48 left.

SAU had an opportunity with its next possession but a hard nose Bears defense capped off by a sack from senior defensive lineman Anthony Mitchell (Duval County, FL) clamped any chance of the Falcons coming back for good as SAU was forced to turn the ball over on fourth down.

A as a team, Shaw racked up 420 total offensive yards including 294 passing and 126 rushing. Campbell was 15-of-22 in pass completions for 294 yards and three TD's while Gibbs rushed for 131-yards on 28 carries. Moses caught five passes for 82-yards and two touchdowns in his collegiate finale while Gorham wrapped its final game as Shaw Bear with 175-yard on three catches and a TD.

Defensively, junior defensive back Jaleel Scroggins (Raleigh, NC) and Mitchell recorded a team-high six tackles apiece in the winning effort.

The Bears who was tied with Fayetteville State and Winston-Salem State for first place in the Southern Division at 3-1 prior to Saturday's contest had an opportunity to go to the 2019 CIAA Football Championship but Fayetteville State would have to lose, the Broncos claimed a 31-17 win at Winston-Salem State – devastating the chances of the Bears making it to the big show.

Shaw concludes its 2019 season 6-4 overall, 5-2 in the CIAA and 4-1 in the South under head coach Adrian Jones. The Bears have not finished 6-4 since 2013 and had not finished 5-2 or better since the 2011 season. Despite not making it to the CIAA championship, the future of Shaw football remains even brighter.
