SHAW SET FOR HOMECOMING AND SENIOR DAY TILT WITH WINSTON-SALEM STATE

RALEIGH, N.C. In a nationally televised game, the Shaw University football team will host Winston-Salem State University on Saturday, Oct. 27 at Durham County Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. as the Bears will honor 13 senior student-athletes and welcome back alumni, family and friends for homecoming.

The Bears are 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) after a big 42-9 win against Johnson C. Smith at home last weekend. Shaw is 2-1 in the Southern Division behind WSSU as the Rams are 4-3 and 3-1 in the CIAA, sitting second in the Southern Division standings tied with Fayetteville State with a 3-0 mark.

 

Shaw is 8-13-2 all-time against Winston-Salem, the Bears have lost its last two meetings against the Rams including the last meeting that went into overtime with Shaw falling 27-21 in Winston-Salem, N.C.

 

Led by senior quarterback Keon Marsh (Queens, NY), the Bears average 308.6 yards per game, including 74.7 on the ground and 233.9 through the air as a unit. Marsh has completed 136-of-209 passes for 1,5930 yards and 10 touchdowns while graduate senior running back Dorrel McClain (Raleigh, NC) has 371 rushing yards on 85 carries and four touchdowns. Sophomore wide receiver Daniel Bender (Jacksonville, FL) posts 32 receptions for 329 yards and two touchdowns.

 

Meanwhile, the Rams had a balanced attack with 348 yards of total offense in the 34-19 win against Livingstone last weekend. Averaging 331.9 yards per game (144.3 rushing, 187.6 passing), WSSU is led by Kerrion Moore with 687 rushing yards and 126 carries while Dominique Graves has completed 33-of-61 passes for 529 yards and two TD's. Quincy Jackson is the team's leader in receptions with 18 for 411 yards.

 

Defensively, Shaw is led by junior linebacker Devon Hunt (Hamlet, NC) who averages 8.9 tackles per game (62 total), conference-best while WSSU's Patrick Green has a team-best 6.4 tackle per outing average (45 total).

 

General admission for homecoming is $30.00, military and senior citizens with a valid ID is $15.00. Visiting students with a valid ID is $20.00, youth ages 5 and under are free while ages 6-14 is $10.00.

 

All current enrolled Shaw students are free with valid student ID.
