Box Score

BOCA RATON, FL – The Shaw University Lady Bears women's basketball team's 23 turnovers were converted into 17 points in a 59-55 loss to Lynn University in the final day of the Lynn University Holiday Classic Monday afternoon at the de Hoernle Sports & Cultural Center.
Senior Julia Cordova led all scorers with a career-high 16 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals.

While the Fighting Knights (4-7) pressured early in the game to total15 steals, Shaw (3-8) shot better from the floor than of their opponent at 40 percent, including a season-high 90-percent from the free-throw line. LU hit 21-of-64 shots for 32.8-percent and 71.4-percent from the charity stripe.
All knotted up at 26-even at halftime, Shaw trailed by seven when Lynn went on a 11-4 run to lead 37-30 with 6:32 left in the third quarter. A 3-pointer from senior Aliyah Cooley (Brooklyn, NY) pulled the Lady Bears within three but the Fighting Knights sandwiched the quarter's last six points with two 3-pointers to go up 45-38.

Shaw cut the deficit twice late in the fourth quarter, including a layup from senior Chelsea Long (Melbourne, FL) at the 3:10 mark and again on two made free-throws from junior Raquel Kellow (Conroe, TX) with 26 seconds remaining. The Lady Bears had the opportunity to tie or take the lead but a costly turnover from senior LaQuisha Taylor (Charlotte, NC), followed by a foul from Cordova sent Lynn to the line for two.

After two made free-throws from the Fighting Knights, Cordova came down the other end and drained a 3-pointer with six seconds left but the Lady Bears then sent Lynn to the line again where Jaylen Snipes was able to secure 1-of-2 freebies. Despite a missed free-throw on the second chance, an offensive rebound for Lynn sealed any chance of Shaw coming back.

Snipes led the way for Lynn with also a game-high 16 points, following Barbora Zilkova with 12 points. Mariah Penascino grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.

Shaw will return to action Tuesday, Dec. 19 at Nova Southeastern at 4 p.m.
