RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University men's and women's basketball team will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 10th when they travel to Winston-Salem, NC to face the Winston-Salem State University for CIAA Southern Division contests in C.E. Gaines Center.
The women's game will tip-off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at approximately 7:30 p.m.
Shaw (19-5, 11-1 CIAA) heads to Winston-Salem, N.C. after downing Livingstone, 80-71 Saturday. The Lady Bears had five players chart double figures in scoring led by Kaula Jacks (Chesapeake Beach, MD) who tallied 14 points and six rebounds. SU trialed 15-8 in the first quarter before building a scoring eight unanswered points to take the lead. Shaw would never relinquish the lead for the remainder of the contest to secure the victory.
The Lady Rams (10-12, 5-7 CIAA) defeated Saint Augustine's 67-42 Saturday in a team effort. WSSU trailed 12-8 to the Lady Falcons but the Lady Rams used their defense to help them get back into the game, holding SAU scoreless for 7:24 in the first quarter. WSSU took their first lead on the contest in the second quarter and would not relent the lead. Kandace Tate registered a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds in the win.
The last time these two teams met, Shaw turned in a dominant performance, defeating WSSU 91-64 on Jan. 20th in Spaulding Gym. The Lady Bears lead the all-time series 32-14 over the Lady Rams.
The Bears (10-14, 7-5 CIAA) enters Wednesday competition after snapping a two-game losing skid with an 88-78 victory over Livingstone Saturday. Shaw trailed at the break 33-31 until the Bears took the lead for good the 8:21 mark in the second half. Larry Richardson, II (Garner, NC) scored his 1, 000th career point and finished the evening with 15 points, while David Madol (Manchester, NH) finished with 19 points to lead all scorers.
As for the Rams (11-12, 4-2 CIAA), WSSU suffered a heartbreaking 58-53 loss to Saint Augustine's Saturday. The Falcons hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to take the win. Terrell Leach led the Rams with 14 points.
Last meeting, the Bears defeated the Rams 87-70 on Jan. 20th in Spaulding but the Rams lead the all-time series with a 54-33 record.
