RALEIGH, N.C. – Shaw University will be hosting Fayetteville State University in a men's and women's basketball doubleheader on Wednesday, Feb. 17th on Senior Day at C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. Prior to tip-off of the men's contest, the department of Athletics will honor the seniors on the men's and women's team and senior cheerleaders.
Shaw will honor a total of 17 student-athletes on Wednesday, including five women's basketball players - Tabatha Anderson (Manhattan Beach, CA), Kaula Jacks (Chesapeake Beach, MD), Bryann Guyton (Richfield, MN), Eboni Ross (Columbia, SC) and Fantasha Tyson (Raleigh, NC), followed by seven men's basketball players – Akeem Echols (Baltimore, MD), Jamar Cooper (Petersburg, VA), Devin Delaney (Laurel, MD), Joell Hopkins, Jr. (Raleigh, NC), John Savoy (Temple Hills, MD), Kristopher Timmons (Durham, NC) and Aquil Younger (Philadelphia, PA), and two cheerleading – Jalisa Perry (Shelby, NC) and Dorothy Pulliam (Roxboro, NC).
The Lady Bears (21-5, 13-1 CIAA) who clinched the Southern Division title last weekend after dominating cross-town rival Saint Augustine's 96-58 will honor their five seniors before a battle with the Lady Broncos (13-12, 7-7 CIAA) at 6 p.m. in Spaulding. Shaw took the lead at the conclusion of the first quarter and never looked back to win their twelfth-straight game. Eboni Ross (Columbia, SC) led all players with 16 points, six rebounds, three assists, three steals and a career-high seven blocks.
FSU comes to Spaulding after suffering a 71-68 loss to Winston-Salem State. The Lady Broncos fell into a deficit early and was never able to recover for the remainder of the contest. Courtney Best led FSU with 28 points, while grabbing and eight rebounds and collecting two steals.
The Lady Bears won the first meeting back on Jan. 27th with a score of 68-63.
On the men's side, the Bears (11-14, 8-5 CIAA) saw their two-game win-streak snapped by cross-town rival Saint Augustine's, 93-90 in their last outing. Shaw missed two free-throws down the stretch that resulted in a good 3-pointer for SAU at the buzzer to win the game. David Madol (Manchester, NH) scored a season-high 26 points and grabbed six rebounds in the loss.
As for the Broncos, FSU (11-13, 5-9 CIAA) earned a 67-50 victory over Winston-Salem State in their last outing. The Broncos led the entire way after charting a 35-26 lead at the break and would use that same momentum in the second half to capture the win. Joshua Dawson finished the game with 20 points and five assists to lead FSU.
Shaw loss the first meeting at Fayetteville State, 74-68 on Jan. 27th.
The Bears will square off with the visiting Broncos at approximately 8 p.m. broadcasted live on WSHA-FM 88.9 with Donal Ware providing play-by-play commentary, while Michael Rochelle will perform the color analyst.
In addition, tomorrow's game will offer free pizza to first 100 Shaw students that enter Spaulding Gymnasium as a gratitude of their continued support of both the men's and women's programs this season.
