RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University men's and women's basketball team will travel to cross-town rival Saint Augustine's University for CIAA Southern Division contests on Monday evening. The women's game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at approximately 7:30 p.m. in Emery Gymnasium.
This will be the first meetings for both teams as the original contests were scheduled for January 23rd but was postponed due to inclement weather in the area.
The Lady Bears (16-5, 8-1 CIAA) head to Emery Gym looking to seek their seventh straight win. Shaw had five players score in double figures in the 93-74 victory over Johnson C. Smith this past Saturday. The Lady Bears owned a 17-2 lead to start the game against JCSU. Although the Lady Golden Bulls showed efforts to carve the lead, SU remained poised and would rebuild the lead to 19 points to secure the win.
As for the Lady Falcons (3-17 overall, 0-10 CIAA), SAU is still searching for their first conference win on the season after dropping 85-52 decision to Fayetteville State in their last outing. Sycoya Dorsey scored 19 points and Ke-Ashe Lee contributed 14 points for SAU in the setback.
The Lady Bears have won the last 11 games against the Lady Falcons in the last five years.
The Bears (9-12, 6-3 CIAA) head to Harvey D. Heartley, Sr. Court after downing Johnson C. Smith, 108-93 on Saturday in Spaulding Gym. Shaw had five players chart double digits in scoring led by Joell Hopkins, Jr. (Raleigh, NC) who produced a game-high 25 points, while grabbing eight rebounds.
Shaw built a 13-point lead in the second half as JCSU would get no closer than six points the remainder of the half, taking the victory.
The Falcons (7-13, 2-8 CIAA), led by Quincy January are on a two-game win-streak. SAU defeated Fayetteville State, 65-58 in their last outing as January finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Anthony Gaskins added 12 points, while handing out five assists and collecting five rebounds in the win.
Last season, the two squads split the regular season with both teams falling at home.
Following Monday's competition, the Bears and Lady Bears will play host to Virginia State University on Wednesday, Feb. 3rd for CIAA crossover action. The women's game is slated for 6 p.m., followed by the men's game at 8 p.m. in Spaulding Gymnasium.
